UNFI Named to Food Logistics' 2018 Top Green Providers List
Providence, RI, -- Jun 18, 2018 -- Food Logistics, the only publication exclusively dedicated to covering the movement of product through the global food supply chain, has named UNFI to the 2018 Top Green Providers list for the fifth year in a row.

The annual list recognizes companies that enhance sustainability within the food and beverage industry through their products, services and/or exemplary leadership. Each year the criteria for earning a spot on the list becomes more difficult. Food Logistics evaluates companies based on benchmarks such as participation in sustainability programs, like the EPA’s SmartWay, and operating in facilities which are LEED® certified and/or feature solar panels, LED lighting and other energy saving installations.

“UNFI is committed to reducing our carbon footprint and fostering resilient communities in the face of climate change. We work hard to keep our trucks, distribution centers and office buildings updated with the most advanced energy-saving technologies so we can continue to help sustain a healthier planet and healthier people,” said Alisha Real, Sustainability & Philanthropy Manager.

In fiscal 2017, UNFI made several key achievements in sustainability.

  • Achieved a 2.5% reduction in absolute CO2e emissions
  • Generated 712,000 MWh generated in on-site renewable energy
  • Diverted 81% of waste from the landfill
  • Upgraded 5 distribution centers with energy efficient LED lighting
